Pet Dogs Instill Beneficial Character Traits in Children
Pet dogs can have a positive influence and instill beneficial character traits in children, say experts.
According to psychologists at Oregon State University, teaching children to care for a puppy enhanced their social skills.
"Adding a dog to your family can be really beneficial to the whole family, but most importantly to your children," says Kenneth Wolk, author of "The Adventures of Beans, the Chubby Chihuahua." "It will make children happy, enhance their self-esteem, and teach them valuable life lessons."
In his book, Mr. Wolk describes the funny adventures of two adorable Chihuahuas, Beans and Hollywood, and how they teach each other the importance of friendship and trust.
"Most parents today are very busy and can't spend too much time with their children," says Mr. Wolk. "As a result children are usually lonely or isolated. That is why dogs can be crucial in their lives-dogs can be friends and companions and help these kids build confidence at the same time."
A recent study by researchers from the University of California showed that children who read to Fido really perform better. Dogs make children comfortable, and children know dogs will not criticize them for mistakes.
Besides comfort and unconditional love, dogs can help children to learn important life lessons such as:
Friendship
Responsibility
Loyalty
Trust
Patience
"I believe dogs are amazing creatures and besides being good teachers, they are fun," says Mr. Wolk. "There is nothing more rewarding than coming home to a dog who is jumping and panting with unbridled joy."
Kenneth Wolk is an entrepreneur and lives in Long Island City, New York. When not writing, he spends time with his dogs, Hollywood and Beans.
