SAS Flash Cards for Apple iPad and iPhone Good for All Ages

CARY, N.C. - (BUSINESS WIRE) - SAS' new and improved SAS Flash Cards for Apple iPad and iPhone is now available from the App Store. The free app lets users choose from more than 3,000 flash cards or create their own custom decks that can be published for public download.

"This is a unique educational app for Apple mobile device users," said Armistead Sapp, head of the SAS Education Practice. "The flexibility and build-your-own capabilities can help learners from preschool up through the workforce learn concepts and memorize information to help them succeed."

Pre-loaded card decks covering core educational subjects offer blank, multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank, true-false and audio options. User-created decks cover a variety of topics inside and outside education.

Teacher Tyler Camp from J.E. Ober Elementary in Garrett, IN, created and published six decks for his third-graders: four for vocabulary, one for contractions and one for plurals. Camp's decks have been downloaded more than 1,500 times in 34 states and 24 countries including Australia, Brazil, China, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Oman, Russia and Vietnam.

"The ability to create and publish decks that directly address what my students need to learn is invaluable," said Camp. "Knowledge retention has increased, and the kids are more engaged in learning."

Camp's district, Garrett-Keyser-Butler Community School District, issued iPads to all students and teachers in third and fourth grades last fall. Those students mentor younger children in the use of the technology. J.E. Ober was named an Apple Exemplary Program, which recognizes model implementations of Apple products.

Superintendent Dennis Stockdale likes the initial results. "Having thousands of learning resources on one device gives our teachers and students so many options," said Stockdale. "Mr. Camp unearthed a free gem in SAS Flash Cards. I look forward to seeing what he and our other educators can accomplish with the new technology."

A quiz mode in SAS Flash Cards enables users to test retention. A map view shows generally where SAS Flash Cards has been played and what resources have been or are currently being accessed. Users can download those resources directly from the map.

Teachers can project cards and quizzes without students seeing the supporting content. The revamped Help section links to tutorials, podcasts and demos on YouTube.

The value of SAS Flash Cards extends beyond K-12 education. For instance, a nursing student in Texas has published several decks of medical terms that other nursing students have downloaded.

If users wish to learn more about the core subjects, the app easily links to Web resources available through award-winning SAS Curriculum Pathways. Available to educators at no cost, SAS Curriculum Pathways provides interactive, standards-based resources in English, science, mathematics, social studies and Spanish for grades 6-12 in traditional, virtual and home schools. SAS Curriculum Pathways focuses on topics where doing, seeing and listening provide information and encourage insights in ways conventional methods cannot. The product engages students with quality content that can be differentiated to meet their varied needs.

SAS Curriculum Pathways provides learner-centered activities with measurable outcomes and targets higher-order thinking skills. All materials are linked to state and Common Core State Standards. Schools can adapt the content to match their technological capabilities.

The SAS Flash Cards app is available for free from the App Store for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch.
