Oct. 17-18: National TacMed Championships Announced by U.S. National SWAT Championships
USNSC has appointed Dr. Ryan Lewis, M.D., as Medical Director and Tactical Medicine Program Director, to oversee all aspects of the USNSC TacMed Program as well as medical care for all USNSC competitive teams. Lewis is an emergency medicine physician and a national authority on Tactical Emergency Medical Services (TEMS). He is also a sworn member of the Jackson/Hinds, Mississippi SWAT Team, serving as both an operator and the lead tactical physician.
"USNSC's TacMed program is a good fit, since greater numbers of law enforcement tactical teams are incorporating medical personnel into their units," said Dr. Lewis. "USNSC is the premier SWAT event in North America, and this program will give TacMed a national stage in law enforcement and tactical medics a chance to test their skills against their peers."
John "Duffy" McAnallen, EMT-P, director of the Emergency Medical Services Authority for the Tulsa region and president-elect of the Oklahoma Emergency Medical Technicians Association (OEMTA), will be the chief of TacMed Operations and Course Marshall for the National TacMed Championships. He is also the medical team commander of the Tulsa County Sheriff's SWAT Team. "The National TacMed Championships will be a culmination of TEMS training, in my view," said Duffy. "National level competition offers TEMS providers a chance to apply their trade in demanding and stressful situations, against other medics from across the country, and against a performance standard â€" it’ll show quickly if your training is up to snuff."
The Advanced TacMed Seminar will be held on Oct. 17, in two four-hour blocks. One four-hour block will deliver medical instruction that includes hemostatics/hemorrhage control, tactical triage, and rescue/extraction platforms; all medical training will be hands-on, and most will use state-of-the-art medical mannequins as training aids. A second four-hour block will be a live fire defensive weapons course for TEMS providers. Weapons training will cover pistols and carbines. The Advanced TacMed Seminar will be limited to 40 individuals on a first-come/ first-in basis.
This will be the third year the U.S. National SWAT Championships will be held in Tulsa; USNSC activities include a two-day vendor exhibition. More than 70 teams and 800 officers and attendees are expected from around the world.
The press and public are welcome at all USNSC activities.
