Oct. 17-22: US National SWAT Championships Events Remain in Tulsa
New dates for the 2011 Championships were announced today by Dr. Jack O'Connor, the USNSC executive director. "October will be more accommodating to teams - summer vacations will be over, the school year started, and the weather is optimal in Tulsa in October."
USNSC features competitions in three Law Enforcement tactical areas: SWAT Team, SWAT Sniper, and Tactical Medical. More than 80 SWAT, Sniper and Tactical Medic teams from across North America and Europe are expected to compete. The public is also welcome to attend.
SWAT teams are law enforcement's top echelon specially trained police units and respond to the most dangerous and violent situations. The acronym SWAT stands for "Special Weapons And Tactics" and has in recent years been encompassed Special Response Team (SRT), Hostage Barricade Team (BHT), Emergency Response Unit (ERU), among others. Regardless of the name, police special operations units undergo advanced training in tactics, weapons, hostage situations, rescue and many other specialized skills. Simply put, when the COPs call 911, it is the SWAT teams who respond.
U.S. National SWAT Championships (USNSC) challenge police tactical teams in three main areas: team organization, weapons employment and physical fitness. Eight live-fire events run in a head-to-head format, with courses modeled after real-world scenarios. All USNSC events are run in full gear, and officers are provided just one round per each target, putting a premium on weapons skills.
U.S. SWAT Sniper Championships (USSSC) require two-man teams, a sniper and an observer/spotter. The USSSC follows a similar format to the team competition - head-to-head, full gear, and one round per target. Six USSSC stages place a premium not only on combat shooting but also on communication and decision-making within the team. USSSC will take place on Oct. 17-18.
National TacMed Championships (NTC) is a new addition to the USNSC program and will be held on Oct. 17-18. NTC is open to all certified medical personal and requires a two-man team. The inaugural NTC will have two events and require medics to demonstrate field medical and rescue skills as well as defensive weapons capabilities.
Activities at USNSC also include three days of medical, tactical, and weapons training from law enforcement’s top experts. On Oct. 19-20, a vendor exhibition on-site at the U.S. Shooting Academy range will showcase law enforcement equipment, services and technology.
