As the Convention kicks off at 1:00 p.m., attendees may choose to visit dozens of booths to find out about everything from American Legion Riders to poppy sales.
At 3:00 p.m., State Treasurer Rutherford will be arriving at the Convention to draw attention to the state’s Unclaimed Property Division which has $1.5 billion in cash, plus contents from Illinois bank safety deposit boxes that have been abandoned for at least five years, so that residents can learn how to claim their assets.
On Thursday, targeted sessions include the American Legion Extension Institute and Chaplains’ Conference, and various caucus meetings. Designated rooms will feature topics such as children and youth, national security, Americanism, judiciary, Veterans Affairs and rehabilitation.
Hospitality Rooms are scheduled for Friday night, while Saturday night features the Commander and President's dinner at the Hotel Pere Marquette Ballroom and will honor Department Commander Richard C. Groharing and Auxiliary President Pam Ray.
On Saturday at 8:00 a.m., the public will gather for a Legion Family Memorial Service at the Peoria Civic Center.
Sure to be a popular attraction is the American Legion Riders Bike Show, to take place Saturday morning at the entrance to convention center, with special Commander’s Choice and Ladies Auxiliary President awards at noon.
According to Mark Sides, public relations chairman for the American Legion of Illinois, the over-riding theme always references the sacrifices of military personnel - "All gave Some, Some gave All."
"Since 1919, the American Legion has continued its proud tradition of service to veterans and their families. Although there are several holidays throughout the year that recognize our nation's military, this week-long event offers an up close and personal look at how the State of Illinois and the American Legion truly honor our country's bravest," stated Sides.
