USF Poly Director Catherine Lavallee-Welch Attends SLA Conference
Catherine Lavallée-Welch, director, University of South Florida Polytechnic Library, attended the Special Libraries Association (SLA) Annual Conference in Philadelphia last month. She serves as chair of the Awards Committee for the Academic Division and is a candidate for division cabinet chair-elect.
"In my candidacy, I'm putting an emphasis on the international aspects of the association and how those units and members need special attention right now," she says. "Those units also offer also a formidable opportunity for growth."
SLA is an international association for librarians and information professionals from the corporate, government, association, non-for-profit and academic sectors. It has 27 divisions representing subject interests, fields, or types of information-handling techniques. Lavallée-Welch is a member of the Academic, Science-Technology and Information Technology divisions. Each division elects officers and publishes a bulletin or newsletter. Most conduct professional programs during the association's annual conferences. ****

Lavallée-Welch attends SLA conference
At the Annual Conference, Lavallée-Welch attended several official functions and events, including the Open Association Board meeting, the Opening and Closing General Sessions and Membership Meetings, the International Reception, the SLA Fellows and First-Timers Meet, and a special Meet and Greet the Candidates session.
A native of Quebec, Lavallée-Welch earned a bachelor's degree in history from the Université du Québec à Montréal and a master's degree in library and information science from the Université de Montréal. After serving as electronic resources and reference librarian at the University of Louisville, she joined USF Polytechnic in 2005.
The SLA is a nonprofit global organization for innovative information professionals and their strategic partners. SLA serves about 11,000 members in 75 countries in the information profession, including corporate, academic, and government information specialists. SLA promotes and strengthens its members through learning, advocacy, and networking initiatives.
