CALGARY, ALBERTA - (Marketwire - July 8, 2011) - The Honourable John Duncan, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development, and the Honourable Len Webber, Minister of Aboriginal Relations for Alberta, today officially opened the Indian Village at the Calgary Stampede.

"I am pleased to be taking part in today's celebration of the opening of the Indian Village," said Minister Duncan. "This is a great opportunity for Canadians to learn about the history, culture and traditions of Treaty 7 tribes and of their contribution to building our country."

The Indian Village has been an integral part of Calgary Stampede for almost a century. Throughout the world-famous event, Treaty 7 First Nations will blend the past with the present with the raising of teepees and demonstrations of Indian games, dancing and meat cutting skills.

"The Indian Village is a celebration of a 100-year partnership with the Calgary Stampede honouring the First Nation communities that are so important to our history," said Minister Webber. "Alberta is home to one of the largest, youngest and fastest growing Aboriginal populations in the country. I invite local visitors and international visitors to enjoy this great cultural experience."

The Indian Village has long been recognized as an opportunity for traditions and cultural values to be passed down from generation to generation, and has been deemed a "must-see" attraction for guests. Every year over one million visitors take part in the Calgary Stampede.
