Weprin Bid Draws Fire From Orthodox Jewish Voters Group

KEW GARDENS HILLS, N.Y., July 8, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Democratic party leaders announced their choice of Assemblyman David Weprin in the special election for the congressional seat vacated by disgraced Congressman Anthony Weiner, prompting an outcry from an Orthodox Jewish voters group based in Queens.

Mr. Weprin voted in favor of the law which recently made New York the sixth and the most populous state to legally recognize same-sex marriages. Mr. Weprin, who publicly identifies himself as an Orthodox Jew, also said that he was proud of his vote on the issue.

The Community Guardians Group (CGG), an Orthodox-Jewish led grass-roots advocacy group, said it regarded Mr. Weprin's support of same-sex marriage as a betrayal of not only the Jewish people, but of all New Yorkers. The Torah that was given to the Jewish people also incorporates the laws binding on all humanity. The CGG was instrumental in securing a ruling in December 2009 from leading poskim, experts in practical Torah guidance, under the banner, Vaad L'Shmor Kehillasenu, advising that no money, no votes and no public support should be given to politicians who publicly support the normalization of same-gender relationships.
