DLDwomen 2011: Second Innovation Conference a Great Success

Over 70 international speakers from 20 countries and more than 500
guests discussed the topic of "Innovation and Authenticity" in the Bavarian
National Museum
"Inspiring and memorable days and a phenomenal bunch of guests," David
Rowan, chief editor of British "Wired" tweeted today about the DLDwomen
2011. This is already the second time the chairwomen, Dr. Maria
Furtwangler-Burda, and the two DLD-founders, Steffi Czerny and Dr. Marcel
Reichart, have put out an invitation to an innovation conference for and
about women. 70 speakers and over 600 "role models" came to Munich on the
29th and 30th of June: successful and influential entrepreneurs,
politicians, visionaries, pioneers, media professionals and artists from a
total of 20 countries.

Responding to the invitation to DLDwomen 2011 was, among others, Ursula
von der Leyen (Federal Minister for Labour and Social Affairs), who,
together with Shahrizat Abdul Jalil (Malaysian Minister for Family, Women
and Social Development) and Pelonomi Venson-Moitoi (Botswanian cabinet),
spoke about the necessity of a legally regulated quota of women and called
for more women in political and economic leadership positions. In her
presentation, Laura Liswood (Council of Women World Leaders) appealed to
women to have greater confidence in their own qualifications. Angela Rittig
(XING) encouraged her listeners to network and to help one another more and
Libby Leffler (Facebook) expressed the wish that more women be willing to
take risks. Daniela Hinrichs (XING, Yellowdine) explained how she supports
even young entrepreneurs as a business angel. The participants unanimously
regarded as exemplary the role of speaker Kasper Rorsted (CEO of Henkel),
who has increased the quota of women in the management of his company to
30%.
The fact that women can and must help other women was the topic of a
roundtable discussion entitled "Violence Against Women" with Somaly Mam
(Somaly Mam Foundation). The panel "Call to Action" also took place against
this backdrop, where chief editor of IHT, Alison Smale, delivered a
presentation on Liberian female peace activists and the power of nonviolent
activism together with the highest ranking woman in NATO, Stefanie Babst,
CISCO's Zika Abzuk and filmmaker Abigail Disney, who also presented her
documentary film, "Women, War and Peace."
Business and media were also topics: Sabine Anger (Vivendi Mobile
Entertainment), Jane Gilson (Microsoft), Franziska von Lewinski (Interone),
Rebecca Grossman-Cohen (The Daily) and Christine Aylward (MakingOf)
discussed the manifold channels of communication in the digital age and the
consequences of this for the market, the media, technological companies and
advertisers in the panel, "The 360degree(s) Consumer". In the digital
Music-Panel Soundcloud, Soundhound, Ujam and Spotify presented their
products as the future of music consumption.
Within a focal point of education, Sugata Mitra and Asha Jadeja, Michal
Segalov (Google) and the Israeli, Idit Harel Caperton (World Wide Workshop),
among others, presented the newest initiatives for getting young women
excited about a technical career. The generational dialogues, which were a
highlight on both conference days, were also exciting: The new business
experts met, among others, everyone from Megan Smith (Google) and tech icon
Candace Johnson to social media expert Joanna Shields (Facebook) and the
well-known trend researcher Lidewij Edelkoort. While Shields spoke about the
fact that, in the fully networked world of digital natives, it is essential
to help children become the authors of their own life story, Lidewij
Edelkoort predicted that Do it Yourself would become the new megatrend and
that people would again start to work more in groups or work together in
more or less binding networks. At the end of the second conference day, the
patron spoke with author Patrick Ness and screenplay writer Shamim Sarif on
the topic of "Storytelling".
Highlights in the area of design sessions included presentations by Hans
Ulrich Obrist, both directors of the Serpentine Gallery in London, by the
American photographer Taryn Simon, as well as the director of the Bavarian
National Museum, Renate Eikelmann.
The two-day conference was surrounded by an entertaining program with
many international artists as well as numerous side events. The publisher,
Hubert Burda, among others, gave out an invitation to the publisher's dinner
in honour of the Israeli delegation. On the eve of the conference,
chairwomen Dr. Maria Furtwangler-Burda, greeted her guests at the
Chairwoman's Dinner at the Schumann's. In addition, the singer Leonie
Casanova, the Austrian pop-rock singer Anna F., as well as the Swiss
alphornist, Eliana Burki, performed.
800 guests attended the "Women's World Cup Night" on Thursday evening;
almost all observing the dress code of black-red-gold. After the roundtable
discussion led by the chief editor of BUNTE, Patricia Riekel, with business
consultant, Susanne Kloss, Peter Loscher (CEO Siemens) and Uli Hoeness on
the topic of "Frauen am Ball - Global Diversity als Chance" (Women on the
Ball - Global Diversity as an Opportunity), there was a charity
goal-shooting match by the Burda Style Group on behalf of the charity,
"Gemeinsam fuer Afrika" (Together for Africa). The proceeds will allow
approximately 50 African children to attend school. Afterwards the guests
cheered at the screening of the World Cup group match between Germany and
Nigeria with the women footballers, which ended with a victory of 1:0 for
the German national team. The last highlight of the evening was the
appearance of the New Zealand electro-pop group, The Naked and Famous, who
really got things cooking in the courtyard tent of the Bavarian National
Museum.
The two-day conference was attended and reflected upon in the media by
numerous leading economic and trade media and newspapers as well as by many
bloggers and Twitter fans.
