5 Hot IT Trends for Business

More than ever, information technology is seen as key to economic growth and therefore spending in several IT areas is projected to increase during the year, according to the 2011 CIO Magazine Tech Poll, an industry gauge for upcoming IT business trends.

"Businesses appear to be shifting from contraction to expansion, which suggests economic recovery," says David Papp, author of IT Survival Guide: Conquering Information Technology in Your Organization. "Investments in IT are positive indicators of this shift."

The poll of over 300 top CIO executives identified three priorities for the year to be business innovations, reduced costs and increased revenue growth streams. According to David Papp, IT investments can help in all of these areas.

"Information is today's most valuable resource," says David. "Using IT systems to manage information efficiently and creatively offers great opportunities for companies. IT strategies such as server virtualization and cloud computing are some prime examples of this."

Five hot trends in IT spending over the next year, according to Mr. Papp, include:

  • Increased mobile and wireless IT investments

  • Adoption of server virtualization strategies

  • Implementation of Enterprise Resource Planning software

  • Utilization of storage virtualization opportunities

  • Shifts from in-house software to cloud computing services

While all categories are expected to jump more than 10 percent in expenditures this year, the CIO poll suggests storage virtualization may represent the largest increase. According to Mr. Papp, storage virtualization allows companies to reduce their IT infrastructure costs while maximizing their IT system's efficiency.

"Because information is today's most precious commodity, companies realize IT systems provide the tools needed to achieve success," says David. "Businesses in a position to make ongoing IT investments will the ones in the driver's seat tomorrow."
