Systems software spending will be boosted by growing interest in cloud computing. It is expected that revenues increase at a mid-single digit rate in 2011, approximately in line with the overall IT industry.

Last month Microsoft officially launched its main entry in cloud-based services for small businesses, Office 365. The Office 365 plan for Small Businesses is optimized for organizations with 25 users or less and includes Office Web Apps, Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, and Lync Online at approximately $6 per user per month.

Also last month, Apple unveiled its much-anticipated iCloud software. The iCloud is a complete suite of services that automatically allows Apple product users to store and retrieve applications in the cloud. The iCloud service will go into effect this fall and if you did not buy your music from iTunes you will have to pay roughly $24.99 a year to transfer your music. Apple CEO Steve Jobs says the iCloud will replace the personal computer as the central hub of people's digital lives. Jobs argues that relying on the PC no longer works now that millions of people have multiple devices, each with photos, documents, songs, phone applications and other files.
