It is alarming to hear of the abundance of near drownings that have occurred in recent weeks. The Sun Sentinel has recently reported on four near drownings the week of June 21. The children were ages one through five years of age, all of which encountered a pool or body of water near their residence. Children ages one through four have the highest drowning rate. In most drowning cases there is a lack of precautions and supervision. Even with these in place some children still manage to fall into a family pool or other water source and drown each year. Children are naturally curious and are easily drawn to water, which is why survival swimming for infants is so important. Children as young as eighteen months can be successfully taught to swim to safety upon falling into water via infant survival swimming lessons. They learn to swim through five consecutive days of thirty minute sessions that teach children safety skills in order to recover when they fall into a pool or body of water. Swimming Survival For Infants: Near Drowning In Plantation Florida Could Have Been Prevented

Saturday afternoon of June 25, 2011 a three year old Plantation child fell into a lake behind his home and nearly drowned. A neighbor heard the child's scream and ran to the lake pulling the child from the water. When paramedics arrived the child was conscious and breathing. It was later found the child is autistic. Autistic children are often drawn to water and can slip silently away to explore their curiosity. Julie Gross and the Swim with Mr. Blue swim instructors are avid autism advocates speaking out on the importance of providing life saving swim lessons to autistic youth. Julie Gross specializes in teaching children with autism to swim safely and successfully in the water.
