July 2: Monument to American Founders and Founding Principles to be Dedicated in St. Petersburg by Private Citizen, Neurosurgeon Dr. David McKalip
Event from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on the southwest corner of 4th Street N and 62nd Ave. N. in between Washington and Jefferson Circles (401 Southwest Boulevard North)
The monument will illustrate eight founding principles for America: Natural Rights, Individual Liberty, Limited Government, Consent of the Governed, Property Rights, Free Markets, Equal Justice and Rule of Law. The double-sided monuments will feature excerpts from founding documents on one side, and portraits and quotes from founders, their inspiration and their heirs on the other. Featured on the monument will be document excerpts artfully designed to emphasize the critical passages from:
- The Preambles of the Declaration of Independence and U.S. Constitution,
- The Bill of Rights
- The Emancipation Proclamation
- The 13th Amendment abolishing slavery.
Images and quotes have been beautifully laser engraved into black granite from Jesus Christ, John Locke, Adam Smith, George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, Ayn Rand, Friedrich Hayek, Murray Rothbard, Milton Friedman, Martin Luther King Jr., and Thomas Sowell.
Dr. McKalip built the monument on private property with private funds on a large empty lot at a major intersection in St. Petersburg.
"These are the principles that once made our country great and have been historically shown to lift the most people out of poverty and ensure that every person is able to develop to their fullest without impediment by people who would claim to be their betters." Dr. McKalip has been a political activist in organized medicine and for limited government for a decade. He has worked to ensure high quality, low cost access to medical care with no interference in the patient-physician relationship. He also worked to create and pass a cap on property taxes through the Florida House two years in a row and came close to amending the Florida constitution with that goal.
"By building this, I am using my natural rights to property and individual liberty to express myself and to spread the word about freedom." He further states, "Charitable acts like these occur every day in America, and we must never forget the power of individuals, free markets and charity to improve society while government routinely falls short of its stated intentions, often producing substantial unintended consequences."
The event will occur July 2 from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and is open to the public. Speakers will include state legislators, local government officials, leaders of grassroots groups advocating freedom, and others. The Web site more fully explains the project at FoundersCorner.US (http://www.FoundersCorner.US) and lists speakers under "events."
