New Marketing Approach to Accelerate Development of Promising Virus-Like Particle Technology

Chapel Hill, NC, June 24, 2011 --(PR.com)-- The Protein Expression Laboratory at the National Cancer Institute has developed a technology using Virus-like Particles to deliver therapeutic proteins into cells. The Laboratory in Frederick Maryland, run by SAIC is part of the Advanced Technology Partnership Initiative. A team led by its Associated Director, Dr. Deb Kumar Chatterjee, has validated the biological activity of Cre recombinase and cytotoxic enzymes delivered using Virus-like Particles in a human prostate cancer cell line. “The delivery is nearly 100 per cent effective,” said Dr Chatterjee, “it goes there delivers the protein, there are no genetic side effects.” Unwanted random integration into the host chromosome, lack of target specificity and toxic side effects have hampered development of therapeutic protein delivery.

The Virus-like Particle technology has potential treatment applications for Diabetes and Cancer, as well as being a valuable tool for researchers. As part of its Advanced Technology Program Initiative to accelerate development of promising technologies, SAIC has adopted a pro-active marketing effort to find interested partners to bring the technology to market. “It is taking too much time and costing too much money to get technologies out there,” said David Hoekzema, Vice President of Business Development, of the Advanced Technology Program, “we are looking at new marketing techniques such as social media and web marketing.” SAIC has teamed up with MMC Productions to create a rich media marketing campaign. Through its site http://www.urweb.tv MMC has produced a three minute high quality video, embedded with text and other information that can be sent to prospective partners. “It is a concerted marketing approach using targeted and viral media, as well as social media and blogs,” said Peter Doyle of MMC Productions. “The problems facing many promising technologies are that the information is in the wrong form and it is not reaching the right people.” It is a multi-prong approach. A link is sent to targeted parties of interest that is internally disseminated, as well as to “nodes” of concentrated potential interest, such as self assembled groups on social media sites like Linked-In, also to associations, blogs and conventions.

SAIC will be presenting the Virus-like Particle technology at the NIH booth 1912 during the BIO International Annual meeting in Washington DC next week. The technology can also be viewed online at http://www.urweb.tv/pharma.html.
