Author Discusses Teens Addiction to Texting on Malcolm Out Loud

Acclaimed Author John Greenburg, who co-wrote the self-help book "Stop Hurting Me, I Don't Buy It!" The Secret to True Happiness, with Gary Blum addressed why today's teens and young adults are infatuated with texting and using cell phones, on the "Malcolm Out Loud" TV show this week.

"There is an emotional attachment to cell phones and other wireless communication devices," Greenburg said on the show, explaining that humans have always felt a need to be connected, and today's devices feed that need.

Greenburg told host Malcolm that teens frequently text and use cell phones to "avoid loneliness and insignificance."

"(Teens) feel that if they don't stay connected to their friends, then they've failed somehow" says Greenburg.

Greenburg also noted that, according to a recent National Safety Council study, 28% of traffic accidents are the result of at least one driver speaking on a cell phone and/or sending text messages, while driving.

Greenburg teamed with ad man Gary Blum to write Stop Hurting Me, which reveals five "must-know secrets to true happiness."
