The Gallup Survey
By Marcella Glenn
The Gallup Survey was released Thursday, first national poll conducted after announcements by Mike Huckabee and Donald Trump that they wouldn't run for the White House. Mitch Daniels announced that he wouldn't make a bid for his party's nomination too.
Seventeen percent of Republicans and GOP leaning independents stated that they would support Romney and 15 percent are ready to back Palin for their party's nomination, per the Gallup survey.
Romney, the former Massachusetts governor and 2008 GOP White House hopeful has all but said yes to being a presidential candidate.
He's been adding to his campaign staff in recent months and formed a presidential exploratory committee in early April.
Palin, the former Alaska governor and 2008 Republican vice presidential nominee, hasn't launched a campaign, but the door hasn't been closed on her running. Palin has hinted that a bid is a possibility.
The poll indicates that Representative Ron Paul of Texas, making his third run for the White House, is at ten percent, followed by former House Speaker Newt Gingrich at nine percent, former Godfather's Pizza CEO and radio talk show host Herman Cain at eight percent, former Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty at six percent, and Representative Michele Bachmann of Minnesota at five percent.
Former New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson and former Senator Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania are tied at two percent.
One in five, little over, questioned said they have no opinion.
The Gallup poll was conducted May 20 through May 24, after Trump and Huckabee, the former Arkansas governor and 2008 GOP presidential candidate, announced they wouldn't run for the White House.
The Gallup poll questioned 971 Republicans and GOP leaning independents by telephone. The survey's sampling error is plus or minus four percentage points.
