9-Year-Old River Edge, New Jersey Hockey Player Wins Discover "Your Kid Could Win a Day with the Stanley Cup®" Contest
RIVER EDGE, N.J. - (BUSINESS WIRE) - A New Jersey youth hockey team spent today with the Stanley Cup after
one of their players, 9-year-old Christian L. of River Edge, won its
"Your Kid Could Win a Day with the Stanley Cup" video
contest, which awards a U.S. youth hockey player, and his/her family,
teammates and community with a day with the Stanley Cup.
Christian's parents submitted his video that, after a public vote to
determine three finalists, was selected by a panel of judges.
Christian's video called, 'A season to fight for PINK AND WHITE,' was
created as a tribute to his mother, who is currently battling breast
cancer and to thank his father for coaching his team to winning a local
hockey tournament (see winning video at www.discover.com/nhl).
Christian was presented with the Stanley Cup at his home this morning
and then brought the Stanley Cup to the ICEHOUSE in Hackensack, NJ where
his hockey team, the Avalanche, plays. After the team spent some time
with the Stanley Cup, Discover invited members of the community to share
in the celebration and take pictures with the Stanley Cup.
" I am so excited because I am the only kid in the country who gets to
spend a day with the Stanley Cup," said Christian.
To be considered for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, parents of
players ages 13 and younger were asked to submit a short video of their
child's most rewarding moment on the ice. Sixty videos were submitted
and voted on by visitors to Discover's Facebook page. The three top
vote-getting entries were judged by a panel on enthusiasm,
appropriateness of video to theme, originality, creativity and sincerity.
Christian's family members are avid hockey fans. His mom and dad met
through hockey and his older brother also plays hockey. Their home even
has a dedicated "hockey room" where Christian's dad made a table and
chair out of hockey sticks. In the room, there are several autographed
hockey pucks, jerseys and photos.
"As the official credit card of the National Hockey League, Discover is
providing a rewarding and unique experience for a young hockey player,"
said Harit Talwar, president of U.S. Cards at Discover. "Considering the
trials and tribulations Christian and his family have had over the last
several months, providing them this opportunity to experience the glory
of the Stanley Cup, along with his teammates and community is just as
rewarding for Discover."
Christian's day with the Stanley Cup will be featured as a short
documentary that will run during the broadcast of Game 2 of the Stanley
Cup Final.
