Earth Day Challenge by The National Society Of High School Scholars Unearths Two Student Winners
Two NSHSS students were chosen to receive $500 for their Earth Day projects
NSHSS students Ashley Funk of Mount Pleasant Area High School in Mount Pleasant, Pa., and Nathan Lovestrand of Citrus High School in Floral City, Fla., received this year's coveted Earth Day prize and recognition.
"We inspire the youth to better themselves and the world," says Claes Nobel, chairman of NSHSS. "Ashley and Nathan have exemplified hard work, and we are proud of their achievements."
Funk, currently a junior at Mount Pleasant Area High School, created an organization called "Pollution Patrol" in an effort to encourage and rally her underprivileged community of Mount Pleasant, Pa., to adopt environmentally friendly habits. The organization, comprised of students, volunteers, assists and conducts litter cleanups, educates citizens on the importance of recycling, and has created the first recycling program within the area's junior and senior high schools. Funk plans to donate her winnings to the organization to aid its efforts.
Lovestrand, a sophomore at Citrus High School and a part of his local Boy Scout troop, created and implemented a "Bat Condo" to help give bats a safe place to live away from predators, and help the community by drawing bats to the condo instead of to residences in the nearby community. Bats are helpful in keeping mosquitoes away. Lovestrand has committed to more than 154 service hours to the project in addition to raising $4,400.00.
