USF Polytechnic Recognizes Need to Cultivate Talented Students
University of South Florida Polytechnic students Marlene Eplin, Shannon Gatlin and Georgia Taafe are candidates for an Educational Achievement Award from the Lake Wales chapter of the American Association of University Women, which helps women in college expand their educational horizons.
Gatlin is also a candidate for a Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, which provides awards for study abroad programs. She has been accepted into the International Summer School at the University of Cambridge in England.
"USF Polytechnic is excited to have several of our exemplary students recognized for their academic and leadership accomplishments that would qualify them for these awards," says Dr. Jan Lloyd, dean of students and acting assistant vice president for student affairs. "Each semester, we reach out to academically talented students, not only to let them know about these opportunities but also to provide guidance and direction on how they can improve their candidacy for such awards.
"We recognize the need to cultivate our talented students so we established a national scholarship advisor, Rachelle Hostetler, to communicate with students about these opportunities. She has served in a similar role at USF in Tampa and has brought her expertise and passion to helping Poly students. "
The Lake Wales branch of the AAUW has supported literacy and cultural education in the local community for 56 years in a variety of ways, including these educational awards. For details about the awards program, call Harriett Wheaton at 863-422-2240.
