FRC Action to Score Senate Majority Leader Reid's Attempt to Force Taxpayers to Pay Directly for Abortions

"The President's threat to veto troop funding is inexcusable," says FRC Action's Tony Perkins

WASHINGTON, April 7, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) vowed today to strip language that protects all taxpayers from paying for abortions in the District of Columbia from the most recent temporary continuing resolution, which also funds the U.S. military for the rest of the year. FRC Action, the legislative affiliate of the Family Research Council, has informed U.S. Senators they will score against any such attempt in its annual scorecard that examines votes on pro-life legislation. Additionally and inexplicably, President Barack Obama has said he would veto the overall legislation that would fund the military at a time when we are in three wars.

FRC Action President Tony Perkins made the following comments:

"At one time, Senator Reid considered himself to be pro-life, but now the facade is completely lifted. The fact that the Majority Leader would strip language that merely stops direct taxpayer funding of abortion in our nation's capital is amazing. I find it even more astounding when you consider he has voted for the same language on abortion funding ten times in the past. His second in command, Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL), has voted for it nine times and even introduced his own legislation to protect taxpayers from funding abortion twice.

"A large majority of Americans, regardless of their view on abortion, believe that taxpayers should not be forced to pay for abortion. FRC Action clearly sees any attempt to strip the D.C. language from the continuing resolution as a vote for taxpayer funding of abortion.

"We urge all Senators to vote against stripping the abortion funding from H.R. 1363, the Responsible Troop Funding Bill, and will score any attempt to do so.

"President Obama's veto threat against funding for our military is inexcusable as he asks U.S. troops to die for this country in three wars. His refusal to address why he is issuing this threat is a slap to those men and women who sacrifice so much for our country," concluded Perkins.
