The Accountability Project Launches Campaign Exposing Commissioner Carlos Gimenez

MIAMI, April 5, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- The Accountability Project, a political committee headed by community activist Vanessa Brito, has launched a public education campaign aimed at exposing the truth about Miami-Dade County Commissioner Carlos Gimenez, who is running for Miami-Dade mayor.

The campaign includes a 60-second radio spot running on Spanish-language radio stations in Miami, and a website containing background information about Gimenez's record.

"On March 15th, voters overwhelmingly stood up and demanded accountability when they recalled Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Alvarez," Brito said. "We need to ensure that voters' voices continue to be heard and that we finally have accountability at county hall."

Brito notes that official Miami-Dade County records show that Gimenez has been double-dipping since 2000, collecting two pensions and salaries. In all, he's collected more than $1.3 million in tax-funded pensions.

"Commissioner Gimenez is a career politician and bureaucrat with a long record of voting to raise his pay and benefits at voters' expense. He's the poster child for what's wrong with county government," she said.

Brito also noted that Commissioner Gimenez recently led the effort to strip accountability from the Miami-Dade Mayor, and that he voted against term limits for county commissioners.

"Commissioner Gimenez just doesn't get it. He's simply ignoring the will of the people. We hope that the radio spot and website will allow voters to learn more about Commissioner Gimenez so they can make an informed decision about the candidates running for Miami-Dade mayor," Brito said.
