SATURDAY, APRIL 2: DRAWING NEW POLITICAL BOUNDARIES

Profile America -- Saturday, April 2nd. One of the most intense uses of new data flowing from the 2010 Census has been under way for some weeks -- as official local data arrives at each of the 50 states. By law, all of this data must have been delivered to the states by yesterday. The arrival of this data has started the process of drawing new political boundaries for each state's congressional districts, as well as seats in the state legislature, county or city councils and school boards. This process, known as redistricting, is often highly political and contested. Earlier, 2010 Census data were used to determine the number of seats in the U.S. House of Representatives allotted to each state.
