PEPFAR Demonstrates Remarkable Good Will and Generosity of American People
U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator International Health Ambassador Eric Goosby, M.D. today highlighted that PEPFAR has demonstrated the remarkable good will and generosity of the American people.
PEPFAR has been receiving Congress' ongoing bipartisan support, and President Barack Obama's continuing stewardship of a landmark program launched by President George W. Bush. This have shown the world that this is a vital, effective and durable element of our foreign policy.
"All across Africa, I have been struck by the deep gratitude of governments and ordinary people for PEPFAR's lifesaving mission. This effort has provided a positive and powerful message in our public diplomacy. This Subcommittee has been a key partner in the success that we have been able to achieve through the years, and we are deeply appreciative."-Mr. Goosby
Mr. Goosby also pointed out that despite challenging economic and budget times, President Obama's Fiscal Year (FY) 2012 request for this program reflects the Administration's strong, continuing commitment on HIV/AIDS. In fact, the President is seeking $7.154 billion in total for bilateral HIV/AIDS programs, bilateral tuberculosis (TB) programs and research, and contributions to multilateral efforts such as the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (Global Fund) and the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS).
