Free Workshop Teaches the Right Way to Reach Homeownership

If early registration for Dollar Bank's upcoming "Mortgages for Mothers Workshop" is any indication, there are more people than ever who want to learn the right way to prepare to purchase their first home. At least that's what Mona Generett thinks. She's Dollar Bank's VP for Community Development and the designer of the bank's "Mortgages for Mothers Workshop," set for Saturday, April 9, 2011 at the Sheraton Station Square. "For the last twelve years, Dollar Bank has been holding these free half-day workshops to teach would-be homeowners the right way to break the rent cycle and buy their first home," Generett said, "and this will be our largest group ever."

"There are no shortcuts when it comes to buying a home," Generett explained. "At our workshop, we explain to potential borrowers the complexities of the mortgage process and help them design a plan to buy a house within their means and to obtain a mortgage that they can afford."

"Highlighting the workshop each year are inspirational presentations by new homeowners, who overcame their own problems with the help of Dollar Bank's credit counselors and obtained a mortgage," Generett continued. "For those that need it, we encourage attendees to enroll in the bank's Credit Enhancement Program to learn how to rebuild their credit with the help of our homeownership counselors, who have helped scores of would-be borrowers understand and resolve their credit problems and confidently buy a home they can afford."

Celebrating its twelfth year, the "Mortgages for Mothers" workshop usually attracts more than 300 female heads of households looking to buy a home. "Projected attendance could top 400 this year," Generett said.

Attendees will learn about the various mortgage loan programs available to them and come to understand the importance and power of credit. They will even get a chance to discuss their individual credit reports with a credit professional.

KDKA TV's Lynne Hayes-Freeland, a single mom herself, will moderate the session.

"Mortgages for Mothers" is only one part of Dollar Bank's efforts to provide special help to those would-be borrowers who have special needs. On a daily basis, Dollar Bank homeownership counselors help would-be homeowners by holding educational classes, private credit restoration counseling sessions, special savings programs and other informational and motivational group sessions.

The "Mortgages for Mothers" home buying workshop will begin at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 9, 2011 at the Sheraton Station Square on Pittsburgh's Southside.
