49% of Americans Fooled by April 18 Tax Deadline
NORWALK, Conn. - (BUSINESS WIRE) - A FreeScore.com
first quarter 2011 survey* of 1,000 Americans 18+ revealed that 49% of
Americans are unaware that the deadline for filing their tax returns in
2011 has been extended three days, from April 15 to April 18.
The extension is due to Emancipation Day, a holiday recognized in
Washington, DC, which falls on Friday, April 15, this year. District of
Columbia holidays have the same legal effect on tax deadlines that
federal holidays do, so all taxpayers will have until April 18, 2011 to
file their returns.
Respondents to the FreeScore.com survey were asked: "Are you aware that
the deadline to your file taxes was extended three days this year?" The
results, broken down by age, gender, education, and income, are below.
Age - Percent Unaware
(18-34) - 54%
(35-54) - 54%
(55+) -
37%
Gender - Percent Unaware
Male - 45%
Female - 53%
Education - Percent Unaware
High school or less - 58%
Some

($50K-$74.9K) - 50%
($75K+) - 58%
According to Carrie Coghill, director of consumer education for
FreeScore.com, "Planning is everything when it comes to finances,
especially tax season. Even though people have three extra days to file
their taxes this year, I suggest they start getting their 2010 tax
information together as soon as possible."
