St. Baldrick's Foundation Announces New Summer Fellowships Totaling More Than $70,000 for Pediatric Oncology Research
LOS ANGELES - (BUSINESS WIRE) - The St.
Baldrick's Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to raising
money for childhood cancer research, announced today that it has awarded
$70,000 in 2011 St. Baldrick's Summer Fellowships. These awards allow
students who have completed their first year of medical school to work
in a pediatric oncology research lab for the summer and complete a
research project. Since childhood cancer research has been underfunded
for so long, few young doctors are encouraged to choose this area as a
specialty. The Foundation is helping change that by introducing students
to pediatric oncology at an early stage of their medical careers.
The St. Baldrick's Foundation has awarded more than 280 grants totaling
more than $57 million for childhood cancer research since 2005, its
first year as an independent foundation. In 2010 alone, St. Baldrick's
funded more than $14 million in grants. With only 3 percent of all
federal cancer research funding dedicated to pediatric cancer research,
the Foundation's grants are critical to continuing the battle against
this devastating disease. Additional grants will be distributed in the
spring and fall of 2011.
"We are excited to have the opportunity to present this fresh group of
students with an opportunity to see the important role they can play in
childhood cancer research," said Kathleen Ruddy, executive director for
the St. Baldrick's Foundation. "We hope it will inspire them to continue
pursuing work that helps Conquer Kids Cancer! None of this would
be possible without the passion and commitment from our thousands of
volunteers. With their support we will continue our mission to fund
research to find cures for childhood cancers and give survivors long and
healthy lives."

The St. Baldrick's Foundation is a volunteer-driven charity committed to
funding the most promising research to find cures for childhood cancers
and give survivors long and healthy lives. The Foundation funds more in
childhood cancer research grants than any organization except the U.S.
government. St. Baldrick's funds are granted to some of the most
brilliant childhood cancer research experts in the world and to younger
professionals who will be the experts of tomorrow. Funds awarded also
enable hundreds of local institutions to participate in national
pediatric cancer clinical trials, a child's best hope for a cure. Since
the Foundation's first grants as an independent charity in 2005; it has
funded over $57 million in childhood cancer research. For more
