HOUSTON - (BUSINESS WIRE) - Two lucky Texans will soon have the smartest homes on their blocks thanks to Reliant Energy's Smart Energy Home Makeover Sweepstakes. Carol Wood of Fort Worth and Susan Engelhardt of Houston will each receive a $10,000 package of technology and services that will give them the power to manage how and when they use electricity.

"My husband and I are thrilled to have won," said Susan Engelhardt. "We are really looking forward to using the home energy automation system linked to the iPad , to use our home automation from almost anywhere. We're always careful with our energy usage but these new tools will greatly enhance our ability to control what we use and spend."

The homeowners will receive a range of innovative tools including:

  • Home Automation - a wireless system that controls a variety of energy-related devices in the home, including a thermostat, light switches and security cameras. The package includes equipment, installation, a one-year service agreement with a home automation provider and one year of streaming music from Rhapsody.
  • Energy Monitoring System - a way for customers to view - from a computer or iPad - how much electricity their home is using and how much it costs to run certain appliances in the home, such as the refrigerator or air conditioning and heating system; includes one-year monitoring service, installation and set up.
  • Flat Panel TV - 46" energy efficient LCD/LED television, installation included
  • iPad (Wi-Fi) - 16GB iPad with case that can also be used to control the home automation system remotely.

"I plan to use the new technology to help me stay current with events, make me more aware of my energy usage and as additional home security," said Carol Wood.

Reliant Energy customers with smart meters have access to smart energy solutions today that provide valuable insights into their electricity use, helping them make informed energy choices.

Reliant has launched e-Sense smart energy solutions, an innovative suite of smart energy products and services that give customers information and convenience that simply did not exist before. Programs available to Reliant customers with smart meters at no cost include:

The e-Sense Gadget is a convenient way for customers to monitor home energy usage by installing the free Gadget on their personalized iGoogle page to track their daily, weekly or yearly electricity consumption.

The e-Sense Weekly Summary Email provides usage information from the previous two weeks, an estimate of total charges for the billing period and energy efficiency tips.

e-Sense Account Management , available on reliant.com, builds on the information provided in the e-Sense Weekly Summary Email by adding more in-depth analysis of the customer's electricity use. Customers can see usage history by hour, week and year; then compare current usage trends to previous totals. It also gives customers a projected bill amount - before the bill even hits their mailboxes - and keeps tabs on usage by allowing customers to set a monthly budget. Customers can also stay informed with personal email alerts for usage, estimated costs and bill due date.

e-Sense also includes a Time-of-Use plan, a choice for customers who can shift their usage to lower-priced, off-peak times, helping them save money. Under this plan, the cost of electricity changes during the day based on overall demand for power, allowing customers to benefit from making choices about when and how to use electricity.

Later this year, Reliant will begin offering customers the e-Sense Home Energy Monitor - a portable, wireless in-home display that will give customers real-time information about their electricity use and cost.

Customers who already have smart meters and want to experience the benefits of Reliant e-Sense smart energy solutions, can call 1-866-203-1888 or visit www.reliant.com/esense to learn more.
