It was in 1981 when the 7th day of March was recognized as Somalia's sports day. Since that time, Somali NOC and its member federations were annually marking the day with sporting events and other celebrations.

"I am very happy that our day arrives with the country's sport stepping into a higher development after recovering from years of setbacks. We are on the way forward," the Somali NOC president Aden Hajji Yeberow told a press conference early today.
