European Court Demand Insurance Companies Treat Women "Equally"
By Ian Brockwell
At first glance this may seem like a victory for women's equality, but in reality this is a decision that will result in women paying a great deal more for their insurance and almost certainly producing more profits for the insurers.
Some believe that motor insurance premiums for women may increase by as much as 50 percent, whilst premiums for men may fall by around 25 percent, if the insurers agree to use the savings made in this way. However, it is more likely that premiums for men will stay as they are, thus producing a nice profit from the extra paid by women.
Having worked in the insurance industry for many years, the discounts given to women have nothing to do with sexism. Premiums are calculated on a number of factors, such as the location of the vehicle, the age and experience of the driver, the type of vehicle, whether the vehicle is kept in a garage overnight, the age of the vehicle and so on.
Insurers have long considered that women are safer drivers than men (although I have often doubted that fact). However, if this is true, why not charge a lower rate for women drivers?
By taking all these possibilities into account enables insurers to provide a competitive quotation based on the risks involved (as it has always been done). Insurance companies gave women discounts because records show they are less of a risk (purely a business decision).

This thinking was also applied to Life insurance premiums, which will also increase now, because women are known to live longer than men (I shall offer no comments as to why!).
EU justice commissioner Viviane Reding said it was "an important step towards putting the fundamental right of gender equality into practice,"
Whilst I fully support equality for women (especially in business), this decision by the European Court is pure stupidity and meddles with the very formula used by insurers (for more than a 100 years) to calculate individual risks. Not only will it affect everyone's pocket in the future, but it must be seen as an own goal for women everywhere.
What can we expect these "experts" to come up with next? Will they say "ageism" should be eliminated from insurance premiums in the future, so that an 18 year-old pays the same price as a 40 year-old to drive a sports car?
Britain has enough politically correct madness of its own, without having Europe introduce even more. Where will it all end?
