Shuttle Bus Fueled By Propane Autogas Offers Sustainable Alternative

Vehicles deliver cost savings, reduced emissions for the limousine, tour, and charter

WASHINGTON- The Propane Education & Research Council (PERC) makes its exhibiting debut at the 2011 International Limousine, Charter, and Tour (LCT) Show in Las Vegas today through February 17 at the Paris Hotel in Las Vegas with a shuttle bus and sport-utility vehicle (SUV), both fueled by propane autogas.

A 25-passenger 2010 Ford E-450 shuttle bus with a Roush CleanTech propane autogas fuel system and an 8-passenger 2008 Ford Expedition SUV converted by Alliance AutoGas to run on propane autogas will be on display in the Propane Pavilion, booth No. D1. PERC representatives will be on hand to discuss how the vehicles can cut carbon and particulate emissions and lower fuel costs while delivering the horsepower and torque of a diesel- or gasoline-fueled vehicle.

"Many companies offer vehicles fueled by propane autogas, which are ideal for the limousine, charter, and tour operators industries," said Brian Feehan, vice president of PERC. "Propane autogas is abundant, clean, safe, and reliable. These vehicles fueled by propane autogas can help create a measurable return on investment for any company's bottom line and help meet sustainability goals."

In its 27th year and with the largest showroom in the industry, the International LCT Show attracts thousands of fleet owners and operators in the limousine, tour, and charter industries.

Propane autogas vehicles reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 17 percent and create 20 percent less nitrogen oxide, up to 60 percent less carbon monoxide, and fewer particulate emissions, compared with gasoline. They also can help reduce operating costs. Federal and state organizations offer various rebates and incentives for purchasing vehicles with dedicated propane autogas systems or converting vehicles to run on propane autogas. In addition, a federal 50-cent-per-gallon alternative fuel tax credit is available through 2011. Most states offer additional financial incentives to encourage greater use of propane autogas. More than 13 million vehicles worldwide operate on propane autogas, making it the most widely used alternative fuel. Propane autogas fleet vehicles include shuttles, taxi cabs, light- and medium-duty trucks, vans, passenger vehicles, and school buses.

The ability to install on-site refueling infrastructure makes the fueling process convenient for limousine, tour, and charter companies with vehicles that return to a central location. There also are thousands of propane autogas refueling stations, with locations in every state. With nearly 90 percent of propane supplies produced in the United States, propane autogas is a domestic fuel that helps reduce dependence on imported oil.

"By encouraging wider use of propane autogas in vehicles for the limousine, charter and tour operator industries, we increase our environmental and national energy security goals," Feehan said.

The Propane Education & Research Council was authorized by the U.S. Congress with the passage of Public Law 104-284, the Propane Education & Research Act (PERA), signed into law on October 11, 1996. The mission of the Propane Education & Research Council is to promote the safe, efficient use of odorized propane gas as a preferred energy source.
