Google Executive Wael Ghonim Credits Facebook For Revolution

"Wael Ghonim, Google marketing executive for the Middle East and North Africa, who was detained and blindfolded for 12 days amidst the chaotic events in Egypt, credits the internet, and social networking websites in particular, for liberating the Egyptian government.

Ghonim probably created the first Facebook page that was used to organize the January 25th protests and Twitter and Facebook were responsible for organizing much of the revolution. Referring to the recent turmoil in the Middle East, CNN's Wolf Blizter asked Ghonim, "Tunisia, then Egypt. What's next?? Ghonim replied, 'Ask Facebook.'

Ghonim, who plans to write a book called "Revolution 2.0" about social media on the internet and political demonstrations, personally thanked Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg during his interview." Read More

The Egyptian revolution wasn't fomented by outside forces, and it wasn't orchestrated by the Muslim Brotherhood. This 21st century uprising didn't feature demonstrators hurling stones or shooting guns. The Internet gave birth to this struggle for democracy and freedom; outraged Egyptians tweeted their frustration and outrage over 30 years of oppression under Mubarak.

Google executive Wael Ghonim is credited for creating the Facebook page that was used to organize the first mass demonstration. After Ghonim was released by the secret police, the Google executive gave a couple of emotional interviews that galvanized the masses.

Ghonim is intelligent, eloquent and charismatic, and most importantly he has Google's support. That's like having the blessing of the Pope and the President of the United States. Ghonim doesn't have an anti-American bias, after all he married an American.

Most Americans probably wish that Ghonim would run for president. Ghonim claims that he doesn't have any presidential aspirations, but maybe his countrymen can persuade him to change his mind.

I urge Egyptians to post messages on Ghonim's Facebook page urging him to run for president.
