BitTorrent and Khan Academy Partner to Distribute World Class Educational Videos
SAN FRANCISCO - (BUSINESS WIRE) - BitTorrent
Inc., a leading innovator creating advanced technologies to
efficiently move large files across the Internet, today released a new
video catalogue app developed in partnership with the Khan
Academy, offering over 2,000 award-winning educational videos to the
BitTorrent community.
"BitTorrent is a great platform to help us fulfill our mission of
providing world-class education to anyone, anywhere," said Salman Khan,
founder and executive director at the Khan Academy. "BitTorrent offers a
unique opportunity to video creators and publishers. Their technology
allows users to download large video files quickly, plus it requires no
costly hosting or infrastructure on our end - an important factor for a
non-profit."
Continued Khan, "Just as importantly, BitTorrent reaches a
massive community of enthusiasts, including many in far corners of
the world where Khan Academy is able to offer global expertise directly
to local students."
"We're honored to support the Khan Academy's vision of bringing
knowledge and education to the world," said Shahi Ghanem, chief
strategist at BitTorrent. "The Khan Academy App is a perfect example of
why we created our App Studio platform: to help content creators connect
with our global user base. In this instance we also enjoy the benefit of
empowering a partner to provide tens of millions of people with free
access to world-class educational content. This is a truly worthy cause.
We look forward to continuing our work with the Khan Academy and other
socially conscious content creators as we foster new content
distribution models."
The Khan Academy app is now available in BitTorrent's
App Studio, located in the BitTorrent
Mainline and µTorrent
software clients. Users may directly access and share free downloads of
any of the Khan Academy video lessons. Topics cover a wide variety of
important educational content, from mathematics to biology, economics to
history and much more. BitTorrent encourages users to make financial
contributions to support the Khan Academy either via
the Web site or directly through the app interface.
BitTorrent first launched the App Studio last August. Other notable
catalogue apps include TEDTalks,
ClearBits,
VODO,
ZuluMusic and more, all offering artist-endorsed content to the
BitTorrent ecosystem. BitTorrent has also spotlighted
a number of musician and filmmaker-endorsed releases over the past six
months, including The
Yes Men Fix the World, Four
Eyed Monsters, PAZ,
Beyond
the Game, and Pioneer
One.
