Mack: Egyptian Democracy Means Nothing Without Freedom
WASHINGTON, Feb. 10, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- As events develop hour-by-hour in Egypt and with reports now surfacing that embattled Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak may step aside, Congressman Connie Mack (FL-14), and member of the House Foreign Relations Committee made the following statement:
"We have heard the calls for democracy throughout the middle-east, but democracy means nothing without freedom. The terms should not be conflated, for democracy has not historically meant the protection of basic human rights in the Middle East, most particularly in the Gaza Strip where the terrorist group Hamas won 'middle-eastern democratic' election and now poses a security threat to the entire region. I urge both President Obama and Secretary of State Clinton to be mindful of the regime change in Egypt and make sure that freedom is the number one priority in determining whether the U.S. should back any new government of Egypt."
