NEW YORK, Feb. 9, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- The countdown has begun! Registration has opened for the inaugural World Spelling Day.

World Spelling Day, the latest event as part of the World Education Games, organized by the creative team behind Mathletics, Spellodrome and World Math Day.

On March 3, for 48 hours, participants from around the world will compete in a series of online spelling games. Players can compete in four age categories, including adult level, with an increasing range of difficulties. Registration is free, and players can have their points added to their school or country tally. The best spellers in each age category will be presented with medals and certificates.

Genevieve Darnley, Director of the World Education Games, said, "Anyone can play; this event is for all spellers, not just the experts. This is an exciting way to get involved in literacy, and unite the world in learning."

Last year more than 1 million students from over 235 countries participated in World Math Day. Many of these have already registered for World Spelling Day this year. World Spelling Day is intended to become an equally well-subscribed event. In the lead up to World Spelling Day, players can practice online and on their iPod Touch, iPhone and iPad.

In addition, World Spelling Day and UNICEF have joined forces to harness the potential of the event and help give children around the world access to quality learning. Family and friends can sponsor participants, with fifty percent of the funds raised going to each school to spend on educational resources and technology; the other half will go to UNICEF's Quality Educational Programs.

As the countdown continues to World Spelling Day on March 3, registration is available at www.worldspellingday.com. Register now and start practicing!
