NFL Football Player Uses Online Fundraising Platform Kickstarter to Fund NFL Lockout Documentary
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - (BUSINESS WIRE) - NFL guard Evan
Mathis will be partnering with Kickstarter.com
to fund his first-ever media project: a documentary about the looming
NFL Lockout. The results of this partnership may be seen at LockedOut.tv.
Mathis, a six-year NFL veteran and alumnus of the University
of Alabama, has already begun production, assisted by film/TV
producer Steven
Gurley. To date, interviews for the project have been completed with
a number of players, agents and trainers, with more interviews planned.
Mathis' status as a player gives him unique insights and access to
players, agents, owners and others who will be personally involved in
any lockout.
Chad
Ochocinco, NFL player, supports the project. "When you have a player
talking about the lockout, it's a lot more refreshing, especially to the
public, to get it from the player's point of view."
Drew
Rosenhaus, sports agent and founder of Rosenhaus
Sports, agrees. "When you have NFL players involved with NFL
productions, that's the best of both worlds. I'm confident that Evan is
going to deliver a great product."
By partnering with Kickstarter.com,
Mathis has found a way to combine his passion for filmmaking with his
'day job' as a professional football player. Funds raised through
Kickstarter will be used to expand the scope of the project, as well as
support postproduction and distribution of the finished work. The
exposure that Kickstarter grants will also increase awareness of the
project among people who might otherwise be unfamiliar with the issues
surrounding the lockout.
Kickstarter.com
is the world's largest funding platform for creative projects. Every
month, thousands of people pledge millions of dollars to projects from
the worlds of music, film, art, technology, design, food, publishing and
other creative fields. Kickstarter represents a new form of commerce and
patronage, where creators keep 100% ownership and control over their
work, offering instead products and experiences that are unique to each
project. The projects found on Kickstarter are inspiring, entertaining
and unbelievably diverse, and run the gamut from big to small.
Kickstarter embodies the idea that a good idea, communicated well, can
spread fast and wide.
