Tehran Condemns Documentary 'Iranium' as Attempt to Thwart Iran's 'Peaceful' Nuclear Activities

NEW YORK , February 8, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Iran's Foreign Ministry Spokesman, Ramin Mehmanparast denounced the documentary film Iranium today, calling the film an attempt to harm the progress of Iran's nuclear program.

Mehmanparast said the documentary "proves that certain Western countries are dismayed by [Iran's] peaceful nuclear activities which are carried out in line with [defending its] inalienable rights," and creates "an unreal atmosphere in order to apply pressure on our policies.

"They should know that this path is wrong and the public opinion will not fall for such fabricated, unreal facts," Mehmanparast added.

Iranium documents the statements and actions of Iranian leaders since the Islamic Revolution of 1979, including the buildup ofIran's nuclear program through the Presidential Elections of 2009.

The film is available now for free online viewing for the first 50,000 registrants at http://www.iraniumthemovie.com, and can also be embedded on websites and blogs.

The free viewing is part of Iranium's nationwide screening event, which includes premiere events today in AMC theaters in select cities, and at community centers acrossthe United States.

The film's flagship premiere event will take place today on Capitol Hill, in the Rayburn Congressional Office Building.

Iranium was screened Sunday, February 6 inOttawa, Canada following a previous cancellation of the film's premiere atCanada's National Library and Archives. The cancellation came as a direct result of requests fromIran's Embassy on the day of the screening.

"In the West, we use freedom of speech to change public opinion. We develop documentaries and software to achieve our goals," said Alex Traiman, director of Iranium. "Iran's leaders on the other hand, develop illegal nuclear weapons, sponsor terror around the world and brutalize their own citizens to achieve their goals.

"I hope that everybody will see this film, so that we in the West will be more afraid ofIran's nuclear program thanIran's leaders are afraid of this film," added Traiman.

Narrated by Academy Award Nominee and Emmy Award Winning Iranian actress, Shohreh Aghdashloo, the 60-minute film uses rare footage fromIran and interviews with 25 politicians, Iranian dissidents, and leading experts on Middle East policy, terrorism, and nuclear proliferation.
