Record Cold Can Make Even a Quick Trip Outdoors Dangerous for Pets

PHILADELPHIA, Feb. 7, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- As the United States battles freezing temperatures and 49 of 50 states have recorded measurable snow in 2011, humans are not the only ones who must stay warm when facing harsh elements. With more than 71 million American homes counting a pet as part of their household, Petplan, America's top-rated pet insurer, reminds pet parents to protect their beloved companions from snow, ice and freezing temperatures, especially as outdoor exposure is a daily necessity for many pets.

"Clearly, no pets should be kept outside for extended periods of time during cold weather, but many pet parents are unaware that even brief trips outdoors can bring problems," said Dr. Jules Benson, Vice President of Veterinary Services for Petplan. "Any time temperatures fall below freezing, there is not only an increased risk of hypothermia, but cold temperatures, snow and ice can cause additional health problems for pets that we might not normally consider. For example, we see an increase in claims due to injuries because of slick paths and sidewalks, as well as claims involving the ingestion of anti-freeze and other common winter chemicals. "

Petplan recommends the following tips for protecting pets during cold-weather seasons:

    --  In freezing cold temperatures, pets should only go outdoors to relieve
        themselves.
    --  Keep pets on a leash - it is easier for them to become lost and
        disoriented when regular scents and landmarks are covered by snow or
        ice.
    --  Remove snow, ice and/or salt from pet paws as all can cause pain,
        discomfort and even cuts and abrasions.
    --  Store coolant, anti-freeze and rock salt so that pets cannot access it -
        all can be extremely dangerous to pets.  When possible, use pet- and
        eco-friendly products.
    --  For small breeds and short-haired breeds, ensure they are wrapped up
        before going outside. Although they may only be outdoors for a short
        period of time, these pets have little protection against cold weather.
    --  For older pets or pets with existing medical conditions, be vigilant for
        any signs of discomfort or changes in temperament.   Like humans, cold
        weather can exacerbate arthritis and other pain sources.
    --  Be prepared for any pet health issues by scheduling regular veterinary
        appointments and ensuring that pet insurance is up-to-date.
