Recent Snowstorms Lure Vehicle Thieves...But LoJack Stops Them Cold

In Detroit, thieves stole a 1997 Dodge Intrepid from the parking lot of an apartment complex. In an attempt to thwart law enforcement, the thieves covered the license plate with snow so the vehicle could not be identified. Fortunately, the Intrepid was protected by the LoJack Stolen Vehicle Recovery System and, once the owner reported his vehicle stolen, police activated the system and began tracking the silent Radio Frequency signal. Members of the ACTION Auto Theft Task Force picked up and tracked the signal and found the unattended Intrepid in a residential neighborhood, where suspects appeared to have parked it to "cool off." Surveillance was set up and when the suspects returned to the car, they were arrested for Grand Theft Auto.

In a second incident in New Jersey, the owner of a 2003 Case Backhoe was preparing for a day of clearing snow from parking lots to keep traffic flowing at the local mall. However, the next morning when he returned to his LoJack-equipped backhoe, he found it had been stolen. Clearly with all the recent snowfall, thieves found this type of equipment more valuable than ever. Just a little more than an hour after reporting his backhoe missing, local police tracked and recovered the equipment in a deserted area of the Ocean County College campus. The backhoe was subsequently returned to its very happy, hard-working owner.
