Avalanche Threat in Kashmir

Srinagar: Snow and Avalanche Study Establishment (SASE) has issued an avalanche threat alert in North Kashmir's Gurez area.
Aamir Ali, Coordinator Disaster Management Kashmir said as per information received from SASE, a medium danger avalanche warning exists in the higher reaches of Gurez in North Kashmir.
He said people living in these areas have been advised to avoid movement during snowfall and avoid steep slopes. "People are also advised not to venture out in avalanche prone areas and they should select routes with care and movement on slopes should be with extreme care. The warning is valid till 1700-hrs tomorrow," he said.
At least 30 persons were killed in avalanches in Kashmir last year. The casualties included seventeen army men who were buried under the avalanche that hit their camp in famous ski resort of Gulmarg.
