The main progressive group in the European Parliament is calling on the Egyptian President, Hosni Mubarak, to resign. "Everybody think that Mr. Mubarak has to leave, with very small exceptions, but I don't think that enough people say it clearly and loudly," said the Vice President of the Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament, Johannes Swoboda. "I think time is here to say it loudly so that people in the streets understand our position and hear our position," he added. In a debate on Egypt and Tunisia with high representative of the union for foreign affairs and security policy Catherine Ashton on Wednesday (February the 2nd, 2011), a majority of Parliament's political groups criticised both the lack of a unified European voice in reacting to the protests taking place in the two countries as well as the ambivalence of Europe's support for the protesters and their cause. MEPs called for a review of the EU's neighborhood policy towards the Mediterranean, in the light of its perceived failure to promote reform. "We agree that the European voice must be the voice of the high representative, and it should be louder, more articulate and should overshadow some of the voices of different foreign ministers because there must be one European voice," said S&D Johannes Swoboda.
