ZOLL PocketCPR for iPhone Training App First to Support New 2010 AHA/ERC/ILCOR Guidelines
CHELMSFORD, Mass. - (BUSINESS WIRE) - ZOLL Medical Corporation (NasdaqGS: ZOLL), a manufacturer of
medical devices and related software solutions, announced today that the
new version of its PocketCPR
for iPhone is the industry's first app to provide CPR
training and practice meeting the just-released 2010 Guidelines for the
American Heart Association (AHA), the European Resuscitation Council
(ERC), and International Liaison Committee (ILCOR) on CPR and emergency
cardiac care.
Since it first debuted at the 2009 AHA Scientific Sessions, the training
app has been downloaded more than 100,000 times. In addition to meeting
the new recommendations, this new version offers more comprehensive
instructions in CPR training.
With this latest version and iPhone instructor, users can effectively
practice CPR at the new recommended depth of chest compressions of at
least 2 inches (5cm) and the proper rate of at least 100 compressions
per minute. The training app provides clear visual and audio
step-by-step coaching on CPR performance and includes the initial steps
to follow in the Chain of Survival. Using Real
CPR Help, the same proprietary technology found in all
ZOLL defibrillators and AEDs, PocketCPR for iPhone provides CPR training
with real-time feedback on the depth and rate of chest compressions.
While the PocketCPR app is free, it also offers expanded CPR training
content as an in-app (app within an app) purchase. This CPR training
program contains videos, written and practical evaluations, and the
opportunity to acquire a CPR course completion certificate. It features
nine video modules that teach the important steps of the latest
guidelines as well as review and test questions that will reinforce and
evaluate one's knowledge of CPR. The program also measures the student's
ability to perform chest compressions and help perfect this skill using
sophisticated algorithms and the phone's accelerometer as the
instructor. The app integrates elements of social media as well,
allowing users to directly post their CPR training accomplishments to
Facebook and Twitter to encourage others to also learn CPR.
Over a million people worldwide die each year from sudden cardiac arrest
(SCA). It is believed that over 70 percent of the time SCA occurs in the
presence of a family member or acquaintance. Delivery of high quality
chest compressions to a victim of SCA can mean the difference between
life and death.
"PocketCPR for iPhone can be used in CPR training programs or for
individual practice at any time. The app will prepare both professionals
and lay rescuers to perform CPR for victims of sudden cardiac arrest,"
said Mark Totman, President of Bio-Detek, Inc., a wholly owned
subsidiary of ZOLL that developed and manufactures the PocketCPR for the
iPhone. "The updated app now has all-new graphics and is user selectable
for multiple languages and metric units, and AHA, ERC/ILCOR CPR
Guidelines."
The PocketCPR app is available without charge through the iTunes App
Store and can be found at http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/pocketcpr/id334738473.
The PocketCPR expanded CPR training content is available as an in-app
purchase for $3.99. For more information and a video demonstration,
