Bullfrog Power, Canada's 100 per cent green electricity provider, today announced its agreement with Kraft Canada to pilot a new green natural gas solution. Through the agreement, Kraft Canada will bullfrogpower® the energy required for Dad's Cookies' baking and packaging processes at its manufacturing facilities with 100 per cent green natural gas and 100 per cent green electricity. The initiative enables Kraft Canada to further reduce Dad's Cookies' energy-related carbon dioxide emissions and support the development of renewable power in Canada. Bullfrog's green natural gas service will be launched to the public later in 2011.

"The main cause of increasing carbon dioxide levels in our atmosphere is the burning of fossil fuels, including natural gas," said Ed Whittingham, Executive Director, the Pembina Institute. "We are excited that Bullfrog Power is capturing wasted gas from landfills and putting this to good use in our homes and businesses. Further expansion of this product to other biogas sources promises to be an important energy solution that will help address climate change. We applaud Kraft for their leadership in working with Bullfrog on this pilot program."

Through the pilot program, Bullfrog Power's generators will inject 100 per cent green natural gas-as well as 100 per cent green electricity-into the respective natural gas and electricity systems to match the amount of gas and electricity used by Dad's Cookies' baking and packaging processes.

Green natural gas is produced by capturing and cleaning the gas produced through the decay of organic matter in our everyday waste stream. It is then injected onto the national gas pipeline, providing a clean and renewable alternative to fossil fuel-based natural gas. Unlike conventional natural gas, green natural gas does not increase the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and therefore helps prevent climate change. Across Canada, Bullfrog's electricity comes exclusively from wind and hydro facilities that have been certified as low impact by Environment Canada under its EcoLogo(M) program-instead of conventional energy sources like coal, oil, natural gas, and nuclear. Dad's Cookies are now bullfrogpowered with green electricity and green natural gas. Dad's Cookies packages bearing the bullfrogpowered logo will be available in stores in April 2011.

"We believe organizations have an important role to play in managing emissions to help address climate change," said Dino Bianco, President, Kraft Canada. "At Kraft Canada, we identified energy as one of one of our six areas of focus back in 2007 and to date, we have focused on energy reduction in our manufacturing facilities. Working with Bullfrog is a natural next step-we further reduce our emissions footprint, support the growth of renewable power in Canada and ultimately help to create a cleaner, healthier environment."

The decision to bullfrogpower the Dad's Cookies line complements Kraft Canada's environmental strategy, which aims to reduce Kraft Canada's energy use and energy-related carbon dioxide emissions by 25 per cent, water consumption by 15 per cent and solid waste by 15 per cent, and eliminate 150 million pounds of packaging material by 2011 based on 2005 levels. Dad's bakes its cookies in two Toronto area facilities-the Lakeshore bakery and Scarborough bakery. Both facilities have undertaken energy reduction projects, from lighting conservation and upgrading to oven optimization, and continue to identify opportunities to further reduce their energy consumption.

"We're pleased to be partnering with Kraft Canada on this pilot program," said Tom Heintzman, President, Bullfrog Power. "By taking the initiative to participate in the program and support green natural gas, Kraft Canada secures its place as a progressive organization among Canada's business community and sets a strong example for other organizations to follow."
