Heidi The Cross-Eyed Opossum Goes on a Diet
By Robert Paul Reyes
"A strict diet may help the Leipzig Zoo's opossum Heidi to lose the crossed eyes that have made her an international attraction.
The overweight white-haired opossum has been on a steady diet of lettuce, carrots and lean chicken to cut down on her fat -- which is thought to be the cause of her crossed eyes, a Leipzig Zoo spokeswoman said on Monday.
It is believed that Heidi's crossed eyes could have come from a poor diet when she was young, causing large fat deposits to form behind her eyes.
Heidi became a star in Germany when her photo appeared in the mass-circulation newspaper Bild in December. The 2-1/2-year-old opossum's German celebrity soon grew into an international sensation." Reuters
Opossums are a dime a dozen, and there has never been an opossum superstar until Heidi came along with her adorable crossed-eyes.
Most veterinarians are of the opinion that Heidi's crossed eyes are a result of a poor diet when she was a baby, causing fat deposits to form behind her eyes. I'm surprised I'm not cross-eyed, I subsist on a diet of junk food and fast food.
Heidi is now on a strict diet in the hopes that her eyes will return to normal. But if Heidi loses her crossed eyes, will she retain her star appeal? Let's hope so, Heidi is adorable, with or without crossed eyes.
