Ban Appoints Gana Fofang as New Deputy Envoy for Guinea-Bissau

Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon has named Gana Fofang of Cameroon as the new deputy United Nations envoy for Guinea-Bissau.

Mr. Fofang will also serve as the UN Resident Coordinator and the Resident Representative of the UN Development Programme (UNDP) in the West African country.

He brings to the position extensive experience after several years of progressively responsible functions in the UN system in the fields of post-conflict development, electoral assistance, de-mining, public administration reform, judicial and security sectors, as well as political and economic governance.

"His leadership and expertise will be an asset for the UN Integrated Peacebuilding Office in Guinea-Bissau and the UN Country Team in the country, as a whole," according to the announcement made on Wednesday.

Mr. Fofang is currently the UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in Sao Tome and Principe. Prior to that appointment, he served as Senior Policy Adviser at the UNDP Africa Bureau/Millennium Project in New York from 2006 to 2008.

Between 2000 and 2006, he was the UNDP Senior Deputy Resident Representative in Laos, Rwanda and Mozambique. He also held various positions within the private sector, UNDP and the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) from 1988 to 1999 in New York, Cape Verde and Algeria.
