Dick "Tin Man" Cheney Needs a Heart Transplant
By Ian Brockwell
Former Vice President, Dick Cheney, has had 5 heart attacks in the last 30 years and underwent bypass surgery in 1988.
In July of last year he had a heart pump fitted, which he describes as a Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) which pumps the blood around his body.
Due to the many things Cheney has done over the years, like his involvement in the invasion of Iraq, his connections with Halliburton, and his dubious actions on the day of the 9/11 attack, it is not surprising he has a reputation of being "heartless"
Even in Bush's memoirs he was described as 'dark and heartless: the Darth Vader of the administration.' Most people would probably accept that Cheney was the real power at the White House and George Bush was nothing more than a figurehead (a person who could be sacrificed if the going got really tough).
Whilst the heart pump seems to be functioning as it should, there are strong rumours that this is just a temporary solution until he can obtain a new heart, and that he is already on a waiting list for this transplant.
We already know how difficult it is to persuade people to donate their organs when they die, so news that Dick Cheney might benefit from such a donation is not going to help matters. Maybe we will see a change in the system now, with donors making a list of the people they don't want their organs going to?

If nature had been allowed to take its course, or he had received the sort of treatment the rest of us get, it is doubtful whether Cheney would have made it past the third heart attack (which is often the case for most). His survival very much supports the saying that "only the good die young"
Despite his ever increasing fight for life, Cheney continues to maintain a hard heart (or pump). In a recent interview he confirmed his support for torture (water-boarding), keeping Guantanamo open, using Predator and the Reaper to launch strikes against terrorist targets in the various places in the world, and saying the private sector should have more authority than the government (doesn't Halliburton already have this?)
I suppose Cheney does have his supporters (so did Hitler!), but I would imagine they are outnumbered by those who see him as a very evil man. If he does manage to get a new heart, we can only hope the good qualities of the donor have some influence on him. Personally, I won't be holding my breath, I think he would have to change a lot more than that!
