Aggreko North America Invests More Than $200 Million in New, Environmentally Responsible Rental Power Technologies
HOUSTON - (BUSINESS WIRE) - Aggreko,
the global leader in rental
power, cooling,
heating
and oil-free
compressed air announced today that its North American business is
investing more than $200 million in the latest power generation
technology. The investment in diesel and natural gas equipment will
provide the best available emissions-control technology on the temporary
utility market. Approximately 40 per cent of the company's investment
will be made by the end of 2010 with the remaining 60 per cent in 2011,
which will create the largest rental fleet of environmentally
responsible power generation equipment in North America.
"Aggreko's customers face increasing restrictions on emissions levels to
meet environmental standards," said George Walker, President, Aggreko
North America. "This investment is part of our commitment to help our
customers meet their emissions objectives. By expanding our fleet of
EPA-certified rental generators, Aggreko will help customers maximize
their productivity and avoid interruptions in their businesses while
reducing their overall environmental impact."
The equipment being purchased by Aggreko includes more than 328 MW
of low-emission, diesel and natural gas generators, featuring the
latest in engine technology manufactured by Cummins Inc.
The new diesel generators offer 70 per cent lower emission levels
compared to previous generations of equipment and deliver proven
EPA-compliant technology. They also feature the latest in safety
and environmental advantages such as extremely quiet operation and
design elements that reduce the risk of fluid leakage.
With more than 300 MW of natural gas units in operation internationally,
Aggreko has considerable experience providing solutions using a variety
of power loads, for applications ranging from large events to baseload
power generation. This is the first time that a large inventory of
natural gas rental units - in a range of sizes - has been available in
North America. The units can be supplied for both short- and long-term
projects.
North American customers choosing natural gas units should carefully
consider the potential benefits in both cost and environmental
efficiency. When used for long-term, continuous operation, natural gas
units have been shown to offer total cost savings of 40-45 per cent
compared to diesel units, primarily due to savings in fuel. All of
Aggreko's new equipment in both diesel and natural gas technology is
approved to operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, in every state in
the U.S. The expanded fleet will be strategically located to provide
prompt delivery for both emergency and pre-planned use.
"This investment and our recently announced acquisition of Northland
Power Services, which provides mobile natural gas power solutions for
the oil and gas exploration and production market in the Rocky Mountain
region, underscores the importance we place on our strategic partnership
with our clients," said Walker.
Previously customers only had the option of purchasing natural gas
generators with a 12- to 18-month waiting period to receive the units
because of limited availability. Once the purchased units arrived, they
were typically needed for no more than six months.
"Now, Aggreko's customers have a rental natural gas solution, ranging
from 65 kW to 1300 kW that can be installed in a matter of days, and
often in only hours," Walker added.
"To help improve safety and operational efficiencies for optimal rental
equipment performance, Aggreko's highly skilled, specially trained
employees offer tremendous added value to this investment," he
continued. "They will be instrumental in helping customers evaluate and
use the technologies to solve problems and seize opportunities."
Aggreko has a long-standing relationship with Cummins going back 40
years, and is already one of its largest users of portable generators
for off-road and non-marine applications.

Aggreko plc is the world leader in the supply of temporary power and
temperature control solutions. Aggreko employs over 4,000 people
operating from over 144 locations. In 2009 we served customers in about
100 countries, and had revenues of approximately GBP 1.0bn (USD 1.6bn or
Euros 1.1bn). Aggreko plc is listed on the London Stock Exchange
(AGK.L), is a member of the FTSE-100 index, and is headquartered in
Scotland. For more information, please visit the company website at www.aggreko.com.
Aggreko provides power and temperature control solutions to customers
who need them either very quickly, or for a short or indeterminate
length of time. Examples would be the supply of power to an industrial
site which needs to service its permanent power supply, supplying a
whole city in times of power shortage, or providing a major sporting
event with power and cooling systems. We serve our customers either
through our 144 service centers, which we call the Local Business, or
globally through our International Power Projects business.
In the Local
business, which accounts for about half of our revenues, we hire our
equipment to customers, who then operate it for themselves, although we
retain responsibility for servicing and maintaining it. In the International
Power Projects business, which also accounts for about half of our
revenues, we operate as a power producer. We install and operate power
plants and we charge our customers both for providing the generating
capacity, and for the electricity we produce. We design and manufacture
equipment specifically for these requirements in our factory in
Dumbarton, Scotland.
Recent customers include the Beijing
2008 Olympics, the Vancouver
2010 Olympics and the power utilities in over 50 countries including
the UK,
France,
Angola, Kenya,
Indonesia, Bangladesh, Venezuela, Chile,
Brazil
and the USA.
