Dallas Alzheimer's Association Anticipates Large Turn-Out at Memory Walk

DALLAS, Nov. 11, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- Several thousand North Texans whose lives have been touched by dementia are expected to attend the Dallas area Memory Walk this Saturday at the Dallas Zoo, according to John Gilchrist, Executive Director of the Greater Dallas Alzheimer's Association.

"With awareness growing and an enormous population of aging baby boomers, we may set an attendance record," says Gilchrist. "We are delighted to have this much support heading into the event."

Event organizers have planned a three-mile trek in collaboration with the national Alzheimer's Association, which helps sponsor Memory Walk events nation-wide during November, Alzheimer's Awareness month.

The Alzheimer's Association, Greater Dallas Chapter is dedicated to providing support and assistance to persons affected by Alzheimer's disease and to their families and other caregivers through the Chapter's core services.

The Dallas Chapter currently provides service for a thirty-four county area including Dallas, Denton and Collin Counties.

Dallas Chapter Board Member Susan Yost will be available for media interviews. She has a poignant story to tell about being a part of the so-called 'sandwich' generation, caring for young children at home and an aging father with Alzheimer's Disease. Her daughter even created a compelling school project to chronicle her grandfather's condition.

Pat and Lee Sneller will be available, as well. They have an uplifting perspective on living life to the fullest with an Alzheimer's diagnosis in the family.

Alzheimer's is currently the sixth-leading cause of death in the U.S., afflicting 5.3 million Americans. That number is expected to increase by more than 50% during the next 20 years, according to a report from the Alzheimer's Study Group.
