SAINT PAUL, Minn. - (BUSINESS WIRE) - Syntiron, LLC, a private biotech company located in St. Paul, Minnesota, today announced the company was awarded a U.S. government grant under the Qualifying Therapeutic Discovery Project (QTDP) Program. Syntiron received the grant of $244,479 in support of its Bacterial Vaccine and Therapeutic Platform Technology, which includes the development of vaccines to prevent infections by Yersinia, Salmonella and Staphylococcus bacteria.

The QTDP program, included as part of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010, is a tax credit intended to support biomedical research in the United States. The grant targets projects that show reasonable potential to result in new therapies to prevent, diagnose or treat chronic or acute conditions; reduce long-term health care costs; or significantly advance the goal of curing cancer within a 30-year period.

Joe Shaw, CEO of Syntiron, indicated that these funds would be utilized to advance the development of Syntiron's platform of vaccine technology: "We consider this award further validation of the goal of Syntiron, to reduce the incidence and severity of bacterial diseases in the world's population."

About Syntiron
Syntiron holds the exclusive license to the human applications of the Epitōpix patented SRP technology which Epitōpix already markets for veterinary applications. These vaccines have proven safe and effective against a variety of animal bacterial infections, and are approved and marketed for use in cattle in the prevention of Salmonella and E. coli infections.

Syntiron is the recipient of a number of grants from the National Institutes of Health and was awarded a $4.1 million contract from the US Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) for early stage development of vaccines against three potential bacterial bioterrorism threats. In December 2009, Syntiron announced an exclusive $149 million world-wide licensing agreement with sanofi pasteur, the world's largest vaccine manufacturer, for Syntiron's human vaccine against Staphylococcus aureus.
