Landis Sewerage Authority Receives EPA 2010 ENERGY STAR CHP Award for Renewable Energy Utilization and Carbon Emissions Reduction Aided by the Use of Prodex's BAE
MT. LAUREL, N.J. - (BUSINESS WIRE) - Landis Sewerage Authority (Landis SA), located in Vineland, NJ, has
received the prestigious 2010 ENERGY STAR CHP (combined heat and power)
Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for increasing
biogas production and reducing its carbon footprint with the help of Biological
Activity Enhancer (BAE ) used in its anaerobic digester. The U.S.
EPA issues ENERGY STAR CHP Awards to recognize CHP systems that reduce
pollution and use at least 5% less fuel than comparable,
state-of-the-art, separate heat and power generation.
BAE
is derived from a peat extraction process and has been proven to
increase methane gas production for increased renewable, clean energy.
This low-cost organic liquid booster, offered by Prodex
a JSH
international company, provides operators an alternative to costly
system upgrades, reduces operating costs, and complements environmental
initiatives.
Many wastewater treatment plants capture the methane produced during the
anaerobic digestion process and turn it into biogas using CHP. The
biogas provides heat and electricity for on-site use or can be sold back
to the grid. Plants that do not capture this valuable resource flare it
off.
BAE helps Landis SA maximize the amount of biogas produced which is
used to fuel a 170 kW CHP system. The system then generates electricity
and the excess heat produced by its engine creates hot water that heats
the facility and warms the anaerobic digester.
The CHP system requires approximately 34% less fuel compared to typical
energy supply systems, thereby reducing CO2 emissions by an
estimated 820 tons per year --equivalent to removing 140 passenger
vehicles from the road.
"We are honored to be partners with the Landis
SA and commend Dennis Palmer, Executive Director, Clark Shimp,
Process Control Manager, and the rest of their team for their exemplary
environmental initiatives," said Kevin Mulvihill, CEO of JSH
international. Mulvihill added, "Biogas utilization is increasing
worldwide. As a low cost booster, BAE will maximize renewable
production capabilities."
