WASHINGTON - (BUSINESS WIRE) - The Wachovia Wells Fargo Foundation announced today that it is awarding 49 unsolicited grants of $1,000 each to nonprofits serving the greater Washington, D.C. area.

The grants are a part of Wells Fargo's Community Partners program. Under the program, banking store team members select a nonprofit in the store's neighborhood to receive a grant. This is the inaugural year for Community Partners in the Greater Washington, D.C. market.

"At Wells Fargo/Wachovia, we expect all of our team members to be community leaders. They are our eyes and ears, helping us identify how our company can best support the community's needs," said George Swygert, regional president for Wachovia/Wells Fargo in Greater Washington, D.C. "The Community Partners program was developed to recognize the local organizations that our team members are passionate about supporting. By combining financial support with the enthusiastic efforts of our thousands of local team member volunteers, we know we can help build a stronger capital region."

In 2009, Wells Fargo contributed $6.9 million to Greater Washington, D.C. nonprofits through corporate and foundation giving, and the area's 2,800 metro-area team members volunteered 10,400 hours for the causes that are most important to them.

"Wachovia is committed to building strong and vibrant communities, improving the quality of life, and making a positive difference where we live and work," said Swygert.
